Constructing a Sustainable Future from Scratch

An Environment-Friendly World Village Project

Anilpuram represents a bold reimagining of rural development through sustainable architecture. This initiative by the Lokaa Foundation moves beyond temporary relief measures to create permanent, eco-conscious living solutions for vulnerable communities. By integrating traditional wisdom with modern sustainable practices, Anilpuram stands as a model for self-reliant communities worldwide.

Why We Are Building Anilpuram

The built environment is responsible for approximately 40% of global CO2 emissions, making construction one of the largest contributors to climate change. Developing nations often equate modernization with concrete, creating an unsustainable trap. Meanwhile, local communities suffer the consequences:

  • The community of Anilpuram currently resides in temporary huts constructed on an active lake bed, leaving them extremely vulnerable to the elements.

  • Families live in constant vulnerability, rebuilding their homes after every major weather event.

  • Every year, the monsoon season brings devastating floods that completely submerge the Anilpuram settlement.

  • Families lose their temporary homes and belongings, children cannot attend school, and economic activities come to a halt during these critical months.

The Anilpuram Mandate: Our Vision for Change

The Anilpuram project is guided by three non-negotiable principles that ensure the village serves as a model for sustainable rural development

Permanent Village on Safe Land

We are building a permanent settlement on government-allocated land away from flood zones, ensuring families never lose their homes to seasonal disasters again.

100% Climate Resilience

All structures are designed with passive thermal comfort, natural ventilation, and weather-resistant materials to withstand extreme climate conditions without mechanical systems.

Circular Economy Principles

We mandate the use of upcycled and locally-sourced materials in all construction, minimizing waste and keeping economic value within the community

We have successfully finished the land survey and site analysis, finalized the comprehensive masterplan design, and set up onsite precast facility

The Execution Team: Pioneers in Sustainable Construction

The Anilpuram project is brought to life through a powerful collaboration of IGH & VBA

Initiative for Green Habitats (IGH):

IGH leads the sustainable architectural design and master planning for Anilpuram. Their expertise ensures climate-responsive layouts that work in harmony with natural systems. The team is headed by Harsha Sridhar, who brings 25 years of sustainable architecture experience and serves as an independent consultant at UNDP for developing sustainable housing technologies in earthquake-prone regions

Verdant Building Alternatives (VBA)

With over 20 years of research and development experience, VBA specializes in low-carbon materials and precast technology. They are headed by Dr. S.N. Ullas, a pioneer in low-embodied-energy construction materials whose research enables permanent housing with a near-zero carbon footprint. VBA develops the innovative construction methods that dramatically reduce the project's environmental impact
